Harry Potter and Philosophy – January 18, 2020
Are you ready to push your understanding of the Harry Potter to a new level? Grab your butter beer and join us as we take philosophical tour of Hogwarts: Is love the most powerful force of all? Do the house promote division and hierarchy? Can you say ‘no’ to your strongest desire like Ron did in front of the Mirror of Erisid? Do our choices or our biology make us who we are?
Joshua Rust and Susan Peppers-Bates are professors of philosophy at Stetson University. Not only are they fans of the Harry Potter series and parents, but they are the authors of “House-Elves, Hogwarts, and Friendship: Casting Away the Institutions which Made Voldemort’s Rise Possible,” published in Reason Papers in 2012.

    What is Happiness? – February 15, 2020
We all want to live happy, fulfilling lives. But what is happiness? Is it just pleasure or does happiness require something else? And what is the best way to become happier? Ancient philosophers thought this was the most important question we could ask. Come learn about what they thought a happy, good life might look like.
Joshua Rust is a Professor and Chair of the philosophy department at Stetson University. He’s also a father who enjoys the challenge of making philosophy accessible to younger students.
